Monday, 22nd July 2019: OneWeb Satellites – a joint venture of OneWeb and Airbus – is set to launch the world’s first-ever high-volume, high-speed advanced satellite production facility. The launch marks the next step in the rapid production of communication satellites, the deployment of the OneWeb network helping to bring transformative internet connectivity to everyone, everywhere.

Currently with half the world without internet connectivity, OneWeb, the global communications company bringing 5G-ready internet to the world through next-generation satellite technology, and Airbus, the global leader for telecommunications satellites, have joined forces to launch their satellite factory, OneWeb Satellites. Located in Florida’s Exploration Park the facility will create over 250 new high-tech jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs that are contributing to revitalising the Space Coast.

OneWeb Satellites are revolutionising the satellite manufacturing space. On opening, they will produce up to two satellites every day – or one per assembly line shift – while traditional manufacturers generally take more than a year to build a single satellite. The high performance, ultra-efficient satellites can be produced for approximately 1/50th of the cost of a traditional manufacturer. In doing so, the facility will produce satellites at a cost, standard and speed that wasn’t possible before.

For Airbus, this new facility is the latest step in the company’s continued and long-standing growth in U.S. manufacturing, job creation and investment. Airbus utilizes 450 U.S. suppliers in 40+ states, spent more than $187 billion in the U.S. since 1990. Airbus spending in the U.S. supports more than 275,000 American jobs.

The first satellites produced for OneWeb by OneWeb Satellites are already in space and performing better than expected. OneWeb will begin monthly launches of more than 30 satellites produced by the Florida factory starting at the end of the year through next year to scale the global network enabling customer demos next year and global service very soon thereafter.
